A new drug is currently being developed in Harvard University as well as in McGill University that will enable to erase bad memories from a person’s mind. The drug propranolol, which is used to treat cardiac disorders, is now being studied as possible treatment for blocking or deleting bad memories. This should be interesting. We are getting closer and closer to making science fiction a reality. At least, when it comes to manipulating our memories. This medical breakthrough reminds me of the movie, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, wherein Kate Winslet’s character erased memories of her relationship with Jim Carrey’s character through the help of a company that offers this procedure. Clearly, we are not far from achieving this.
Now I don’t know if this would be ethical when the development of the drug is finally done but I think this could really be helpful to those who are victims of violence or people suffering from trauma. But I bet this would come with a doctor’s prescription. I don’t think this drug will be made available to everyone. Just imagine, this drug would be the ultimate placebo.
